60! Stan’s birthday!

As a 10/6 born in 60, I always find it heroic when my friends turn 60. I’ve seen people live 75, 89, 94, 17, 18, and so on, but 60 seems magic. Try to think what your loved ones were doing when they were 60. The smart live long and the lucky die happy, …to begin to rid ourselves of age’s oversimplified rules. Live happy.

I vividly remember the very first time meeting Stan. Having left Toronto for several years, only then really emerging from a kind of Windsor expat version of Toronto, to strike up correspondences, sending off poems, with the more popular and user friendly vancouver address to submit from, opened up as much of toronto poetry publishing as any other place, …all these writers I hadn’t known when I’d lived in Toronto but in a tiny Windsor subculture. So when we moved back to Toronto I now had these ‘literary connections’ and one of the first places to go and see what was up was the Idler! And to meet Stan. He was friendly from the drop of the puck, immediately conversant and welcoming, and rapidly then proceeded continuing maganimous contributions to my photocopy mags and whole social cultural world. Anyway, tonight was his surprise party! With readings and performances and thoughtfully healthy rich cake.

Poetry in the Idler days was really quite easygoing days, such pre-internet fun.

Strength and longevity!
